The thyroid gland is a small organ that’s located in front of your neck wrapped around the windpipe(trachea) shaped like a butterfly, smaller in the middle with two wide wings that extend around the side of your throat. The thyroid is a gland. We have glands throughout the body, which are responsible to create and release substances that help our body to do specific functions The Thyroid harmones are responsible for regulating various body functions such as growth, metabolism etc.

If thyroid gland becomes hyperactive,it releases excess amount of harmones into the bloodstream causes hyperthyroidism. In other case if thyroid gland releases lesser amount of harmones into the bloodstream which results hypothyroidism. Both the conditions affects normal activity of cells and other body functions such as metabolism.

What is thyroid disease?

Thyroid disease is the medical condition which produces either more or lesser amount of harmones than the body required.Your thyroid makes harmones that regulate your bodily functions to work normally. So when the thyroid produces too much harmones than your body required, your body uses energy too quickly results into hyperthyroidism.

Using energy too quickly will make you more energetic,it can make your heart beat faster and cause you to lose weight without any effort and even make you feel nervous.Another condition is if the thyroid gland produces less harmones than the body required is known as hypothyroidism. When you have too little harmones in your body,it can make you feel tired, you might gain weight and even you will be unable to tolerate cold temperatures.

Hyperthyroidism

It is an Overactive thyroid disease which is caused by the over production of T3 and T4 harmone, and it is generally caused by the development of grave’s disease i.e. autoimmune disease.Grave’s disease is the condition in which our immune system produces abnormal antibodies that make the thyroid gland produce more thyroid harmone than usual.Hyperthyroidism mostly occur in women than men, teens and middle aged adults.

Hypothyroidism

It is an underactive thyroid disease which causes due to underproduction of T3 and T4 thyroid harmones. It is basically occurs due to autoimmune disease called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, congenital thyroid abnormalities or the removal of thyroid gland in the surgery, etc.

Whether a person has hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland becomes enlarged in both the cases. An enlarged thyroid gland can be felt In the neck as lumps under the skin.Other than hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, some other types of thyroid diseases are thyroid cancer,non-cancerous thyroid nodule, congenital anomalies etc.

These two main disorders can causes due to variety of conditions ,they can also be passed down through inheritance(family). Now if someone question “what is thyroid disease” then you can easily be able to explain this.
