Lactose Intolerant gene:Lactase enzyme activity is responsible for digesting the sugars in dairy products. Most adults, including those who have lactase gene dysfunction, produce adequate lactase activity (enzyme activity) for the usual amounts of lactose ingested from dairy products. It can be assumed that the malfunction of the LCT gene causes lactase enzyme activity to decrease.
Some people with lactose intolerance are unable to digest lactose, but do have lactase activity. Others are lactose intolerant but have adequate lactase activity.(Lactose Intolerant gene)
In either case, excessive lactose consumption can lead to gastrointestinal problems and excessive production of stomach acid. Other effects of the LCT gene dysfunction can include obesity and insulin resistance (diabetes).
What Is Lactase?
Lactase (also called lactase synthase) is an enzyme that helps break down lactose into two sugar molecules, called glucose and galactose. People with lactose intolerance are unable to break down lactose into glucose or galactose, which means they will not be able to drink or consume dairy products like milk, cheese, butter, cream, and yogurt. Why is milk-based yogurt called a ‘milk drink’?
Some people with lactose intolerance can drink dairy products but only if they are strained through cheesecloth, or through a special system of renneting and growing the bacteria in a small container (like a cheese-making vat). This is a fine adaptation of the bacteria to the special acid conditions. How do you know if you have lactose intolerance?
The Lactose Intolerant Gene -Why You Can’t Eat Dairy
A study published in 2012 led by David M. Hillis from the Salk Institute and Jiyoon Lee from the University of Pennsylvania studied the activity of the MCM6 and LCT genes in both mice and humans. They found that, when the expression of the LCT gene is inhibited during development in mice, it causes the development of lactose intolerance later in life.
This phenomenon had never been seen before, and it suggests that the original genes that produced the LCT gene may have been lost. When this happens in humans, the LCT gene is activated later in life and causes lactose intolerance in adulthood. This phenomenon occurs in many parts of the world and affects more than 90% of people who are lactose intolerant.
LCT gene expression is increased in babies who fail to develop the enzyme lactase after weaning. The gene is silenced after weaning because the parents need to be lactose-tolerant if they want to successfully breastfeed.
Through 20 months of age, when the gene expression is increased, the genes that allow adults to metabolize lactose effectively begin to work again. But there is a short delay when lactose-intolerant adults begin to metabolize it; we’re not eating much, so we’re not breaking down the lactose by the time we become adults. Research findings Many lactose-intolerant adults who have tried alternative milk substitutes such as soy, rice, almond, and coconut (and similar milk substitutes such as soy-cashew) still don’t tolerate dairy.
I have this issue and if you too then skipping dairy products can give you relief but this is not the long term solution. So I would suggest you to do excercises like Yoga,high intensity workout,running,aalking etc. And also consult the doctor as many people claim to have bloating issue because of dairy products and were not able to cure at home.
