How can I increase my oxygen level:I am writing this blog because one of my friend asked me this question “How to increase my Blood Oxygen level” as he and his family is corona positive and they are isolating at home because of lack of medical suppliances in our country (India).So he has requested me to write a blog on this problem.

Before knowing the methods of how to increase oxygen level in our body,we need to know,how this virus attack in our body’s biological systems.

Blood Oxygen Level is secondary to the fact that this flu causes proteinaceous secretions( read plasma,various types of white blood cells,platelets) to flood the millions of millions microscopic alveolar sacs in the lungs precluding them from revealing any oxygen.Below you can see the virus size where red blood cell are destroying in it.

  • Color of your skin changes ranging from blue to cherry red
  • Cough
  • Fast heart rate or slow heart rate
  • Rapid breathing

Due to the non-availability of hospital beds and huge demand of oxygen cylinders as India battles the second wave of coronavirus pandemic(covid 19),People who are covid 19 positive are in home isolation under the guidance of doctors because hospitals are advised for the people whose oxygen levels are dropping beyond 92% saturation level.(how can I increase my oxygen level)

A medically approved technique of ‘proning’ is announced by Indian government which will help in increase your oxygen levels.

What is Proning technique (This is the answer to the question “how can I increase my oxygen level”)

It is the method of turning a patient in face down position precise and safe motions from their back onto their abdomen (stomach).This technique is used to help increase the oxygen level and keep the patient in safe zone( above 94%).

Covid 19 Patients who are in home isolation,it is important for them to stay in a well ventilated room and practice proning when there is mild problem in breathing and oxygen levels have dropped below 94,but not beyond 90-92.(How can I increase my oxygen level)

Steps to practice Proning advised by Indian Health Ministry

  1. Lie down on the bed facing towards it and place one pillow below the kneck ,one or two more pillows under the chest and two pillows below the shins.

2. You can do the following variations of proning for 30 minutes each which is mentioned below.

  • Sleep on your belly
  • Lay down on the right side
  • Lay down on the left side
  • Sit up with a pillow on your back

Important note: While practicing this positions ensure yourself that you are not uncomfortable and avoid proning immediately after meals.”Keep track of any injuries or pressure sores especially around bony prominence as mentioned in Ministry bulletin.

Here are some other ways to increase the blood oxygen level:

1.get outside for a short walk:

Going for a short walk increases the amount of oxygen that your body brings in,which increases the overall blood oxygen level and it also improves digestion and feel you more energetic.

2.Grow some plants around you:

Plants have been shown to purify the air indoors as they remove carbon dioxide and replenish a room’s oxygen levels,so our body can absorb more oxygen.

3. Practice breathing exercises

According to pulmonary rehabilitation experts,simple breathing excercise like deep-belly breathing or pursed-lip breathing which open the airways and increase the amount of oxygen in your body.(how can I increase my oxygen level)

You can use pulse oximeter to check the blood oxygen levels at home and adapt this techniques to improve your oxygen levels on your own.
